This infographic focuses on the questions that still remain about the very first galaxies to form in the universe. As light travels through space, it stretches to longer, redder wavelengths by the expansion of the universe. NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope will push the boundaries of what is observable in the universe farther back in time and space, detecting light emitted by the earliest galaxies more than 13 billion years ago.
One challenge that I encountered on this project was rendering something theoretical and un-observable, with the help of science advisors and education experts we chose an art style that could help to visualize things without getting too specific about the details. Developing the layout and working with Leah, our writer, was also a wonderful process. We exchanged ideas back and forth until we arrived at a layout that could clearly convey galaxies at different points in time, the final design came out very close to the final sketch we developed.
